    Understanding OCTG: Drill Pipe, Casing, and Tubing

    OCTG is the umbrella term for the three main categories of steel pipe used in oil and gas wells, and each one serves a different purpose. Drill pipe is the heavy-walled, threaded pipe that transmits rotation and drilling fluid from the rig floor down through the drill string to the bit at the bottom of the hole. It is designed to handle high torque and tensile loads, and it is the tubular most commonly shipped in large volumes from Houston to drilling programs worldwide.

    Casing is the larger-diameter pipe that is cemented into the wellbore to keep the borehole open and to isolate different geological formations from one another. It is run in sections after a section of hole is drilled, and it stays in the well permanently. Tubing is the smaller-diameter pipe that is installed inside the casing as the conduit through which oil or gas is produced to the surface. Because casing and tubing remain in the well, their specifications, thread types, and grades are dictated by the well design, and they are typically shipped together as part of a single well program.

    Each category comes in standard API lengths, commonly around 30 feet for drill pipe and roughly 30 to 40 feet for casing and tubing, though Range 3 drill pipe can exceed 45 feet. The length, diameter, wall thickness, and weight per foot all influence how the pipe is bundled, what equipment is needed to load it, and whether it fits in a standard container or requires flat racks or breakbulk stowage.

    Thread Protection and Corrosion Control

    The threaded connections at each end of an OCTG joint are precision-machined surfaces that must arrive at the wellsite in pristine condition. Even minor damage, a dinged thread, a bit of grit, or surface corrosion, can prevent the joint from making up properly, which can lead to leaks, failures, or costly fishing operations downhole. That is why thread protection is the first line of defense in any OCTG shipment.

    API 5CT, the industry specification for casing and tubing, calls for thread protectors to be installed on every threaded end before the pipe leaves the mill or the threading facility. These protectors are typically made of steel or high-density plastic and are designed to stay in place during handling, bundling, and transit. They keep moisture, salt, and debris away from the machined threads and cushion the connection against impact. We verify that protectors are present and intact before any pipe is loaded for export, and we arrange for replacements if any are found missing or damaged.

    For ocean transit, where pipe is exposed to salt air and humidity for weeks at a time, additional corrosion protection may be applied. This can include external coatings such as varnish or paint on the pipe body, the application of corrosion-inhibiting compounds inside the thread protectors, and the use of VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) packaging materials inside containers or around breakbulk bundles. The level of protection is matched to the transit time, the route, and the destination climate, so that the pipe arrives ready for inspection and use.

    Bundling, Banding, and Loading for Transit

    OCTG is almost always shipped in bundles rather than as individual joints. Drill pipe is typically bundled in quantities determined by the pipe size and weight, with each bundle banded with steel or composite straps at multiple points along its length to keep the joints from shifting. Casing and tubing are bundled similarly, with the number of joints per bundle calculated so that the bundle weight stays within the handling capacity of the equipment at both the loading and receiving ends.

    How the pipe is loaded depends on its length and the mode of transport. Standard-length joints that fit within a 40-foot container can be loaded in bundles directly into the container, provided the total weight stays within the container's payload rating. This is the most common approach for casing and tubing in standard API lengths. The bundles are blocked and braced inside the container to prevent longitudinal movement during transit, which is critical on ocean vessels where rolling and pitching can shift unsecured cargo.

    Longer joints, or bundles that exceed container weight limits, move on flat racks or as breakbulk. Flat racks are open-top, open-side platforms that allow pipe to be loaded and secured from above and from the sides, which is necessary for out-of-gauge lengths. Breakbulk stowage means the pipe is loaded directly into the ship's hold or onto the deck, secured with wire rope, turnbuckles, and dunnage. This method is used for large-volume shipments or for pipe that is too long or too heavy for any container-based solution. The choice between container, flat rack, and breakbulk is driven by the pipe dimensions, the total tonnage, and the handling capability of the destination port.

    Export Documentation for Tubular Goods

    Exporting OCTG from the United States requires a standard document set that is consistent across most shipments, though specific destinations may add requirements. The commercial invoice is the primary trade document, it describes the goods, their value, the seller, and the buyer, and it is used by customs authorities at the destination to assess duties and taxes. The packing list details the contents of each bundle or container, including the number of joints, the pipe dimensions, the bundle weights, and the total quantities, which allows the receiving party to verify the shipment against the order.

    The bill of lading is the contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier and serves as the receipt for the goods. For ocean shipments this is typically an ocean bill of lading, and for air shipments an air waybill. The certificate of origin may be required when the destination country has a preferential trade agreement with the United States and the goods qualify for reduced duty rates under that agreement. Depending on the commodity and destination, additional documentation such as export licenses, inspection certificates, or material test reports (MTRs) may also be required. We prepare and coordinate the full document set so that the shipment clears customs without unnecessary delay.

    What Drives the Cost of OCTG Shipping

    The cost of shipping OCTG internationally is driven by several factors that interact with one another. The length of the joints determines whether the pipe can move in standard containers or requires flat racks or breakbulk, and this is often the single biggest cost driver because breakbulk and flat rack rates are substantially higher than container rates. The weight per joint and the total tonnage of the shipment determine how many bundles, containers, or flat racks are needed, which directly affects the total freight cost.

    The mode of transport, ocean versus air, has a dramatic effect on cost. Air freight for OCTG is typically reserved for emergency situations where a rig is down and the cost of downtime far exceeds the premium for air. Ocean freight is the standard for planned shipments and offers the lowest cost per ton for large volumes. The destination port's capability also matters, ports that can handle breakbulk and have adequate crane capacity and draft depth may offer more routing options and better rates than ports that are limited to container discharge. We evaluate all of these factors together when we prepare a quote, so that the routing and mode are matched to the cargo and the budget.
